According to Maria Humphrey's death certificate, Maria "Herrod" (probably a typo) was her mother and was born in England. The Humphrey's held close family ties with the Harrod family both in England and in America during their period of emigration, at the early part of this century. Maria and her husband Robert are listed in the 1881 British census at Thornton Heath. She does not appear in the 1891 census, where Robert is listed as a widower.
